5th Grade Students Visit Vaughan and Discover the Secrets of the Media
As part of their inquiry unit on the media, 5th-grade students had an unforgettable experience during their visit to Vaughan, a leader in teaching English through innovative platforms such as radio and television. This activity, designed to motivate students and enrich their learning, was filled with surprises and practical lessons.
The day began in a meeting room, where the students listened to the inspiring story of Richard Vaughan, the founder of the station. They learned that his main goal was not just to teach English but to help his listeners overcome their fear of learning and empathize with their challenges. This message resonated deeply with the students, who highlighted that it’s always possible to learn something new with effort and dedication.
Next, the students became real radio hosts. With great enthusiasm, they participated in recording a program where they took on different roles, from presenters to interviewers. The experience sparked their creativity and gave them an understanding of the teamwork involved in radio production.
The third activity transformed them into creators and editors of advertisements. The children showcased their ingenuity by crafting original messages and learning how ads are structured to capture the audience’s attention.
To close the day, they visited the television studio, where they were fascinated by the magic of the teleprompter and other audiovisual resources used in recordings. The students not only had the chance to participate in a TV show but also discovered the many facets of television production, from directing to acting.
We are very grateful because, without a doubt, it was a day that will stay in everyone’s memory and marked the beginning of exploring the fascinating world of the media.
